There were fingers in a number of pies last week when the annual Porthleven Pie and Pasty Competition was judged.
This took place at the usual venue of the Atlantic Inn and saw a good number of entries, with 32 pies and pasties judged.
Judging the 2014 contest were doctors from Helston Medical Centre and its sister practice in Porthleven.
They sampled all the pies on offer, before eventually awarding this year’s star baker honour to Ginny Harvell for her chorizo and minced pork pie with a homity topping.
Despite Ginny having only “thrown it together at the last minute,” the judges were all in agreement over its flavour combinations.
It led to her being presented with the top prize, followed by Gavin Lang in second place, with Linda Hosking and Rick Jubb sharing the third spot.
Organiser Les Walton said: “It went very well and there was a good turnout.”
There were two auctions of paintings, with one from Susie Ward raising £190 and a spitfire print donated by Geoffrey Wellum making £200. A raffle and bingo also took place.
As judging drew to an end, all those attending were able to pay £2 for a plate and then sample all the pies.
“Thank you to everybody who turned up, and to the local businesses, including the Harbour and Ship pubs, who donated prizes for the raffle. It was a good, all round effort,” added Mr Walton.
The event raised £1,335 for Children’s Hospice South West, which cares for children with life-limiting conditions at Little Harbour, St Austell.
