People in Cornwall are being encouraged to do their bit to show Cornwall is open for business by helping to pick up litter on local beaches on Sunday.
With half term just around the corner, local residents and visitors will be keen to take advantage of Cornwall’s beautiful coastline. Unfortunately the huge waves which have pounded Cornwall over the past few weeks have left litter on many local beaches.
While the Council is busy clearing debris from as many beaches as possible, Volunteer Cornwall and Clean Cornwall have joined together to launch the “Great Cornish Beach Litter Pick” and are calling on local people to put on their gloves and join in.
Organised litter picks will be held on ten local beaches between 11 am and 1 pm on Sunday. These are • Bude – Summerleaze • Polzeath • Looe • Falmouth – Gyllyngvase • St Ives – Porthmeor • Perranporth • Newquay – Fistral • Par • Porthtowan • Gwithian.
Andy Brelsford from Volunteer Cornwall, said: “We want as many people as possible to join the litter picks and would ask everyone to help us spread the message on social media by using #doourbit .
“The events of the past few weeks have shown the amazing strength of community spirit in Cornwall and we want to mobilise this people power to pick up litter on beaches and show that we are open for business “.
The organised litter picks will be led by Volunteer Cornwall and Clean Cornwall, with support from Cornwall Council’s Environment and Localism Services, and waste contractor Cory who will pick up the bags of litter which have been collected.
“We have tried to organise the litter picks on beaches right across Cornwall but don’t worry if your local or favourite beach isn’t on the list as you can organise your own litter pick” said Lady Mary Holborow, chairman of Clean Cornwall.
“ Information on how to set up a littler pick are available on the Clean Cornwall website www.cleancornwall.co.uk and don’t forget to post your event on the Clean Cornwall site and on the Volunteer Cornwall Facebook Page“
