Falmouth RNLI crews were in action on Sunday, after shouts to help a sailor with a suspected broken leg and a yacht in trouble six miles out at sea.
The pagers first went off at 8:15am tasking the all-weather lifeboat to carry out a medivac of an injured sailor aboard the tanker Karina Theresa anchored in Falmouth Bay. The casualty had a suspected broken lower leg.
The crew were called were on their way to the casualty at 8:33am, arriving at the Karina Theresa at 8:44am. Two lifeboat men were put onboard the tanker to asses the state of the casualty and on their evidence the crew of the lifeboat were able to carry out a transfer of the casualty into the lifeboat. They then proceeded inshore to the ambulance that had been alerted earlier and passed the casualty into the care of the paramedics.
The lifeboat was released from the operation at 10:11am and it was washed down and refuelled back at the lifeboat station, ready for the next emergency which came just minutes later.
RNLI volunteer lifeboat press officer, Gerry Gearon, said: "No sooner had the crew changed out of their foul weather gear and started heading for their cars so that they could go and resume their Sunday off when the pagers alerted them to their second rescue of the day.
"A 36 foot Westerly yacht, Mylor Lady, some 6 miles to the south east of Dodman Point had managed to get a rope wrapped around its propeller.
"The pagers alerted the crew at 10:22am and they were on their way again at 10:34. Nearly an hour later they had located the stricken vessel and, after first ascertaining that all onboard the yacht were fit and well, a tow rope was passed and they commenced the long tow back to Mylor Harbour.
"As they approached Mylor the Coxswain of the lifeboat, Carl Beardmore, called up the yacht marina launch to come and take over the tow as low tide prevented the Richard Cox Scott from going all the way in."
At 2:30 pm the lifeboat was released from the operation and returned back to base where it was washed down and refuelled.
