Following a meeting with local fishermen in Porthleven last week, the Deputy Prime Minister has confirmed that those affected by recent bad weather will be able to access the Business Support Scheme announced by the Government.

Nick Clegg met with the local harbourmaster and fishermen in Porthleven Harbour in West Cornwall last week during his visit to the South West. One of the key issues raised with him was how their businesses had been affected by recent bad weather and asked the Deputy Prime Minister what the Government could do to help.

Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister, said: “The fishermen told me how they were suffering because of the recent bad weather. They wanted to be able to access hardship funds, just like other businesses in flood affected areas, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to do just that.

“The Government will provide funding of up to £10 million for the Business Support Scheme to help affected businesses, including the fishermen I met in Porthleven.

“Many fishermen in the South West have been unable to fish because of the dangerous conditions, and their livelihoods depend on their ability to go out and catch fish. It is only fair that they should have access to the same fund as other businesses that have been affected.”
