The driver of a digger in Penryn had a lucky escape this morning when his machine nearly toppled into river behind Waterside House.
Chris Jackson, who owns and operates the digger, was working on a retaining bank when he picked up a lump of granite which was too heavy, leading to the machine overbalancing and ending up with its arm dangling in the water.
Chris escaped unharmed, and said: “There’s nothing wrong with me, it was just a weight thing which has gone a bit wrong.
“I picked up a lump of granite, and slewed out over the water to get it to the other side, it was heavier than I thought and it tipped so I lowered it over the beach for safety.
“But I didn’t open the grab fast enough.”
Firefighters were also called to the scene with crews from Falmouth, Truro, St Austell and Camborne (including specialist rescue teams) mobilised after the report that a swing-shovel (digger), had toppled into the water with possibly a person trapped.
Firefighters from Falmouth quickly established that no persons were trapped or injured and the oncoming fire crews were returned.
