An afternoon of craft and music were enjoyed and cheered the spirits of members at the February meeting held in the Welfare Hall.

They carefully cut out paper flowers – all the individual petals and leaves, such as colourful peonies, graceful tulips and elegant purple iris with their pale green stems and leaves. The cut edges were painted to cover up the white. Then the moulding process took place under the guidance of tutor Margaret Williams; this gave the realistic shapes to the petals. Finally all the pieces were glued together with artistic flare to create the 3-D paper flowers that were attached to a card.

Other favourites were the butterflies – so colourful with wings almost flying off the card as on a summer’s day.

As members snipped and fixed they sang along to the accompaniment of a ukulele. One member had attended beginners classes at Denman, the WI Residential College in Oxfordshire. Whilst the ukulele is easy to learn to strum and play two or three chords, suffice to say this ukulele player had not really progressed to the Intermediate class as yet. So, she will remain anonymous and continue her lonely practice sessions trying to improve her C to F to G chords and hopefully progress to Dm and Em. This year she will not be busking on the seafront nor taking bookings to entertain local groups!

However, members will recall the relaxing wet Wednesday afternoon when they were singing “She’ll be coming round the mountains” and “You are my sunshine” as they were creative with the craft of decoupage.
