The holy communion service held on Sunday, the second Sunday before Lent, was celebrated by the Rev Andrew Stevenson, priest-in-charge, who in his sermon said that we, all of us, worry, sometimes about small things, sometimes large things.
Jesus, in our final extract from the Sermon on the Mount, tells us not to worry about inconsequential things like how we look or what we shall eat. Rather, He says, “Seek ye first the Kingdom and God’s righteousness.” Taken in the context of the last few weeks’ readings, we can see this as a further call to concentrate on the things of God. If we get our relationship with God right, then most other things will either fall into place, or, if they do not, we will probably find that they weren’t really that important in the first place! What we are called to is a sense of perspective and if we can keep things in the right order of magnitude, then our worries will inevitably decrease. “Seek first the Kingdom” said Jesus and then all the other things will be added as well.
The Old Testament lesson taken from Genesis chapter 1 v 1-to end and chapter 2 v 1–3, was read by Mr Stevenson. The New Testament lesson taken from Romans, chapter 8 v 18–25, was read by Tony Morris. Mr Stevenson also read the gospel reading taken from Matthew chapter 6 v 25–34. Intercessions were written and read by Angela Brown. Joan Treloar played the organ and keyboard and Mary Stevenson and Tom Treloar led the singing.
St Peter’s Church Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place on Sunday, March 16, after the 10am service.
