An engineering company based in Falmouth has stepped in to help save the clubhouse at Helston Athletic Football Club.

Fugro Seacore has given galvanised steel to keep the roof of the Kellaway Park clubhouse from flying off – after it started lifting two-feet into the air during the recent storms.

Work began on Monday to fit the steel, which the company has donated – saving the club between £8,000 and £10,000.

The building is not just used by footballers, but is a community hall hired out by various groups and for parties.

Club chairman Paul Hendy said: “We had some serious problems in the storms. The clubhouse roof was lifting by two feet and then banging back down.

“All the steelwork going up is galvanised, so we shouldn’t have this problem with corrosion again.”

He offeered a huge thank you to Fugro Seacore for their donation, which he said benefited the whole community.

Mr Hendy also paid tribute to Lee Atkinson and his team at RGB Building Supplies in Porthleven, who within an hour of receiving a phone call from the club had turned up with a crane to dump one and a half tonnes of sand onto the roof, to weigh it down until repair work could be carried out.
