Sunday morning worship was led by circuit reader, Elizabeth Tremayne, who took the traditional Lenten theme of Temptation, supported by her husband, Rex Tremayne and her sister, Wendy Mitchell, who joined her in a discussion of the topic and read relevant pieces of scripture.
Palfrey Turner also read a lesson; Pam Hall led the ceremony of the Lenten Cross and David Philp was the organist.
Sunday evening was the occasion of a highly successful Songs of Praise in support of the Porthleven Fishermen’s Association Emergency Fund. The event was very well attended and the singing of hymns with a maritime theme was ably led by the men’s choir, who also rendered three items of their own, under their conductor, the Rev David Pountain. David Philp was again organist.
The evening began on a slightly hilarious note, as the congregation were invited to sing a specially written chorus “Now we’re open for business” which is to be incorporated into a support DVD for the fishermen and local businesses and made available on line shortly. Great enthusiasm was shown for this and indeed for the other parts of the service. Jeremy Hosking spoke on behalf of the fishermen and Philip Ward, Harbourmaster, thanked the people of the town for the support they had shown for the restoration of the harbour.
The Rev Beverly Turner acted as compere and led the closing prayers. Tea and biscuits were served and the collection was well in excess of £600.
