Shoppers in Penryn were able to buy a wide range of local produce at the weekend with the opening of the town’s first Saturday market.
Market-goers were able to buy locally sourced or produced produce including cheese, meat, vegetables and pastries, as well as flowers and jewellery, at the first of what is hoped to be a monthly market.
Held in the Methodist Hall, it was organised by Bonny Congdon, who runs a stall at the Friday market and organised a similar food fair during last year’s arts festival.
She said: “We’re doing this for the community, for people who don’t necessarily come into Penryn on a Friday, or for Penryn residents who work.
“All the food is produced in or around Penryn, which ties into people’s ideas of keeping down food miles.
“Penryn has the third oldest market in Cornwall, this is to keep traditions going, support local business and make local businesses more available to Penryn people.”
The next market is scheduled for April 12, and the plan is to hold it on the second Saturday of each month.
