Saturday's bright, sunny weather brought out the crowds for Devoran Spring Flower Show with visitors commenting on how much they enjoyed it and what an interesting variety of exhibits were on display.
James Wharram and Hanneke Boon, of James Wharram Designs, opened the show and presented the cups, prizes and awards. In his opening speech James said he was very impressed by what was on show and that the children's section in particular was of a very high standard, showing how they had used their inventive powers for a lot of the work on display. He felt it boded well for the future of the Show.
Even the recent wet winter did not stop the exhibitors in the flower section coming up with some superb blooms with an excellent variety of flowers, shrubs and plants on display. The daffodil and camellia section were extremely well supported and the cookery and photography section of the show always has a high number of entries and the floral and handicrafts section are also popular.
Children enter into the spirit of the show, producing some wonderful, inventive items to display. The wide variety of classes open to children include art work and writing, photography, cookery, flower arranging, Lego models, Easter gardens and handwork as well as decorated and imaginative eggs. This year there were three scarecrows guarding the doorway into the hall. The judges were so impressed that they awarded them joint first prize. Devoran School and Pre-School are great supporters of the show and the work produced by the children is always highly praised. The work they submit is judged at the school.
As always at the show, the ladies who run the tea room worked flat-out all afternoon, the home made cakes proving popular and the plant stall doing a roaring trade.
Ron Scamp, of Quality Daffodils, Falmouth, has supported the show for many years and puts on a wonderful display of blooms.
The chairman, John Charlton has expressed his thanks to the committee for their hard work in organising the show, and also thanked the volunteers who helped set up and pull down the staging. He also extended thanks to the judges for their difficult task and expert eye when selecting winners.
Although a popular annual event, new help is needed on the committee to keep the show going. Anyone interested is invited to the AGM on May 7, at the Parish Room. They hope to see all their regular exhibitors and many new faces at the show in 2015.
