Twenty members of Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club made their way up to Newquay last week for this year’s south west area weekend.
Held in a different county each year, the event saw 1,000 young farmers from across the region taking part for various competitions and enjoying entertainment.
The young farmers were lucky enough to represent Cornwall in three fiercely fought competitions, with the club members taking part in the mixed rounders narrowly missing out to Devon to take second place. The team was made up of David Hosken, Frances Hosken, George Hosken, James Hosken, Matt Hosken, Hayden Jenkin, Rebecca Jenkin, Hannah Smith and Beth Tremayne.
The club also had a significant role in one of Cornwall’s three public speaking teams with Jonathan Kitto and Harriet Dark taking part in the Junior Reading competition along with Charlotte Jones of Madron YFC, coming third in the competition.
Cornwall’s intermediate Speaking team was made up of all Helston members and the team of Rachael Benney, Lucy Bray, Frances Hosken and Matt Hosken won the ‘Just a Minute’ competition and will now represent the south west along with a team from Devon at the southern regional finals next week.
