Dolphins will be the stars of the Helford Marine Conservation Group’s annual meeting taking place at Gweek Village Hall on Saturday, March 29.
Guest speaker will be Dr Simon Ingram, marine lecturer from Plymouth University whose illustrated talk will cover the conservation ecology of coastal bottlenose dolphins around the UK including Cornwall, and what these animals represent in terms of European populations.
Dr Ingram’s connection with Helford began on a family sailing holiday in the 1970s and led to a career sailing across the Atlantic and Pacific on cetacean research yachts before focussing on coastal dolphin populations.
The short annual meeting ahead of Dr Ingram’s talk begins at 7.30pm and entrance costs £3, although members and children are free. Refreshments are available.
Future events being run by the Helford Group this year include a heron and egret survey of the river, a practical look at the secrets of shore survival, the beauty of the Helford’s wild flowers, and Cornish hedges.
In the summer the spotlight will turn to the marine life, with a muddy shore exploration looking for crabs and critters, and the popular Helford Conservation Riverboat Cruise. Stunning Prisk Cove will be the location for a rockpool ramble, and there’ll be the annual barbecue at Durgan.
