AFTER four months of hard work, students at Falmouth School finally took to the stage this week with their production of Oh What A Lovely War.
The choice of Joan Littlewood’s acclaimed musical, which charts the events leading up to and for the duration of World War I, is particularly poignant as the 100th anniversary of the start of the war approaches.
Drama teacher and director, Jeremy Eden, said: “It has been very much in the news recently. In the centenary year of the outbreak of that terrible conflict, new theories about the decision-makers and even the actions of the soldiers have been questioned. This demonstrates that the show is as resonant and relevant today as when it was first performed in 1963.”
The students are bringing to life 130 characters in just 90 minutes, using song, dance, white stick and a traverse theatre space. Mr Eden is full of admiration for their efforts and is hoping people will snap up the last remaining tickets.
“It is exactly the kind of show that makes drama so special, ie it seems to be a simple tale of officers and soldiers, told in a light-hearted manner, but underneath that layer is a darker more serious one about conflict, camaraderie and carnage,” he said.
The show began its run at Falmouth School on Monday and yesterday there was a special performance when local pensioners were invited in to see it free of charge.
There are still tickets for the final two shows, which take place at 7pm tomorrow and Friday. Tickets cost £5/£3 concessions and are available by calling the school on 01326 372386.
