The opportunity to step back in time and experience the Second World War through the eyes of Mawnan residents is being offered as part of a competition to celebrate the launch of the village's very own DVD.

Mawnan at War features Mawnan residents who lived in the village during the wartime years and played an active role in the war effort.

Using archive film and photographs provided by villagers, as well as interviews conducted in the present day, the story is told through the eyes of residents and veterans.

The DVD has been funded through a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, D-Day Voice and Home Front Recall - a government initiative to rekindle memories 60 years on and produce a record of experiences and stories for future generations.

Executive producer for the DVD was Dr Denis Gartside, with Sylvia King and Chris Hibbert acting as producers.

Dr Gartside, who is also chairman of Mawnan parish council, said: "I think it's important we made this video as it records forever what the village did. I think it's also important that we never forget the bravery of these people. A number of people died from the village - we did this to remember them. It's dedicated to them."

Stories include the D-Day landing parties from Trebah Beach - for which the road in Mawnan had to be widened to allow the tank transporters access - and the spies who travelled from Helford Passage. It also tells of the ship that was on guard in the Helford River during the war - the Nazarene.

One of the most chilling stories comes from Percy Randlesome, via archive recordings taken before his death, in which he tells of his time as a prisoner of war and being sited near Auschwitz, witnessing the murders of many Jews.
