PERRANPORTH 1 WENDRON 0
A GAME that appeared to be heading for a goalless draw was rescued from its mediocrity by a goal five minutes from time that earned Perranporth a less-than-deserved 1-0 Jolly's Combination League win against Wendron.
Until then neither side had threatened to take the game by the scruff of the neck in a bid to win it, but with one of the few meaningful attacks of the game Perran snatched a victory that looked beyond them.
Wendron, however, were no better and were as guilty as Perran at proving that they could be just as ineffective with their finishing as anyone else.
The visitors had only one worthwhile chance in the first half. It came in the 25th minute when Mike O'Neill picked up Steve Hodson's pass and squared the ball to Adam Toy who saw his shot blocked by John Mitchell who, fortunately for the home side, guessed right.
Sean Johnston got behind the home defence with some determined runs, but Wendron were unable to make anything of the crosses.
Wendron had another good opportunity ten minutes into the second half when Toy and Hodson worked a move to set Mark Pope free. He beat a defender, but as he closed in on goal Mitchell closed down the space and the shot went narrowly wide of the target.
The killer goal came in the 85th minute when Lee Denton's cross to the far post was met by Capeling who headed it back the way it came into the far corner of the net.
A final push saw Wendron almost snatch an equaliser when Mitchell did well to save from Pope and then threw himself into the path of Glyn Hobbs' follow up shot and saved what would have been a goal with his face. Mitchell needed treatment for the blow, but his bravery ensured Perran held on for a 1-0 win.
"On reflection I would say that the goalkeeper's bravery in saving Glyn's shot in the last minute deserved to win a game that frankly, on general play, neither side deserved to," said manager Steve Webber.
On Saturday Wendron will face another difficult game when they entertain champions Truro City, kick off 2.30 pm.
