Readers whose New Year resolutions include getting fit and doing something to help others are being offered a perfect solution by the Helston-based charity ShelterBox.
The charity is launching an adventure challenge that will see teams of four testing their skills and endurance on Dartmoor this April.
Supporters of ShelterBox, which delivers emergency aid to victims of disasters around the world, are being invited to get a taste of the charity's work at first hand, and raise some much-needed money at the same time.
Teams taking part in the challenge will be required to navigate a 30-mile course carrying a 50kg ShelterBox loaded with everything needed to complete the course and survive an overnight camp on the moor.
ShelterBox founder and general manager Tom Henderson said: "Our ShelterBox response teams work in all kinds of conditions and we pride ourselves on getting the boxes to where they're needed by whatever means possible. That has involved using everything from helicopters to donkeys to rafts. The last stage in the line, though, is often muscle power - simply picking up the box and carrying it."
The charity, which held a successful inaugural event last year, has once again teamed up with organisers endurancelife.com and sponsors Vango for the second ShelterBox Challenge.
Mr Henderson said: "The challenge gives people a chance to see what it's like having to deliver the boxes in person. This event is tough, but it's also an excellent opportunity for people to work together in an inspiring environment to overcome a considerable physical and mental challenge. The funds raised will also give our work a real boost."
Over the past six years, ShelterBox, which is run by the Helston-Lizard Rotary Club, has provided emergency accommodation for more than 450,000 disaster victims, sending tents and other life-saving equipment around the world in its now famous green boxes.
Volunteer teams often accompany the boxes, making sure aid gets to the people who need it most. Recent operations have seen boxes sent to Kenya, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Somalia.
This year's ShelterBox Challenge is taking place on April 14 and 15. A maximum of 50 teams can take part, with each team asked to raise a minimum of £1,000. Teams can register at www.shelterboxchallenge.com. More information is available at 01548 856117.
ShelterBox is also organising a sponsored walk around Burrator Reservoir on April 15 to coincide with the challenge. More information is available by calling 01326 569782.
