A Penryn brewery has bottled the UK’s first shipment of fair transport rum, after a barrel was delivered by horse and cart.

The Rebel Brewing Company took charge of the delivery last week, after it had crossed the Atlantic from the Dominican Republic in the hold of the sail-only schooner Tres Hombres.

Using traditional methods to get the barrel from Falmouth’s North Quay to the Parkengue brewery in Penryn meant the rum was carried from source to bottle without the use of fossil fuels.

Fluffy, the man who arranged for the shipment to be delivered to Falmouth, said: “It’s sailed across without the use of an engine, so there’s no carbon footprint. It’s up to 45 days for the journey, so the rum ages in the cask, and it gives it a particular flavour as the movement is different to that of a modern ship.”

Rebel Brewing's managing director Guillermo Alvarez said: “We are honoured to be chosen by Tres Hombres and New Dawn Traders to bottle their rum.

“It fortifies our green credentials as we aim to provide exceptional beers in the most socially responsible and environmentally friendly way as possible.

“We are always looking for ways to reduce our impact without compromising the quality of our products, and this is a step in that direction.”

After bottling, the rum will be available for sale exclusively at the Rebel Brewing Company's brewery and shop on the Kernick Industrial Estate, Penryn.
