HISTORY was made at the 25th World Pilot Gig Championships as Falmouth achieved a triple victory on the Isles of Scilly.
The men’s, women’s and women’s super veterans all achieved victory in the three day competition, which ran from Friday to Sunday.
In recent years Falmouth have been dominant in the event. For the women this success was the fifth consecutive victory, and the fourth in a row for the men.
David Barnicoat, president of Falmouth Pilot Gig Club, said: “Hearty congratulations to the ladies, men and the ladies super vets for a job well done. They are truly ambassadors of the sport and a credit to the town of Falmouth. Well done to all.”
Falmouth Pilot Gig Club was formed in 1985 with one boat named Energy. Further gigs were added in 1992 and 1997 when the clubs’ women started to dominate the sport. The boats are all covered by a trustee agreement to ensure they stay in Falmouth.
