Falmouth coastguard has called off the search for a female steward who is believed to have gone overboard yesterday (January 11) from a 24,000 tone Russian bulk carrier Vera Maretskaya'.
The search has been called off due to the fact that "with the sea temperatures at this time of year, life expectancy is about one and a half to two hours, and more than three hours had elapsed before we were called", said a member of the coast guard.
The coastguard received the first call yesterday at 10.50 am. All weather lifeboats were launched yesterday from Falmouth and the Lizard and two rescue helicopters were also scrambled to search the area.
However gale force 9 South Westerly winds made conditions extremely difficult and the search was finally called off.
