Threemilestone School in Truro has taken a big stride towards green travel with the introduction of a new Walking Bus' on Tuesdays for children who attend the school. The school is calling the scheme Two Feet on Tuesday'.
The Walking Bus, supported by five volunteer parents, means the children will now be able to walk to school on Tuesdays. This will help to cut down on congestion and pollution around the school entrance.
The school has introduced the scheme with the help of Cornwall County Council's Travel Awareness Team. Staff have provided training for the volunteers, and appropriate literature and guidelines to the parents and children who join the scheme. The Travel Awareness Team ensure that chosen routes are suitable and as safe as possible, consulting with Traffic Safety Engineers and Road Safety Officers to ensure all aspects of safety are considered.
The Walking Bus parent volunteers and children will wear high visibility tabards for safety, on loan from Cornwall County Council, and will start at Chyvelah Vale, collecting children along the route to the school entrance on Polstain Road.
Rachael Thomas has been working with the school on their Travel Plan. She said: "Our surveys have shown where the majority of the pupils who attend the school live and our joint aim, with the school, is to address the issues that accompany the expanding residential area around Gloweth and encourage as many children to walk from the area as possible, reducing the number of vehicles coming into Threemilestone village as possible."
"The School is hoping to run a second walking bus from the other side of Threemilestone village in the future."
