The bid to make Cornwall the first region of culture for Europe has received overwhelming support with both national and international backing. The head of Arts Council England and a directive from the European Parliament have given support for the initiative, which could see Cornwall become the first ever designated region of culture.
Chief Executive of Arts Council England Peter Hewitt toured the Duchy and praised Cornwall for its sense of collaboration, co-operation and shared purpose in moving forward with the bid. Following his visit, Mr Hewitt wrote to Cornwall County Council member Eric Brooke, asking for regular updates on the bid.
He described the Hall for Cornwall, as "alive and buzzy", said the projects he visited in Redruth was "extremely exciting" and that the Porthmeor Studios in St Ives were "inspirational".
Meanwhile, the European Parliament has recognised that there are opportunities to create regions of culture in rural areas, along the lines of capitals of culture such as Liverpool. The recently published Sifunakis Report reinforces the importance of preserving the natural, architectural and cultural heritage in rural and island regions.
Miranda Bird, Director of Cornwall Arts Marketing, said: "This is a significant show of support for the Cornwall Region for Culture campaign. Peter Hewitt was particularly impressed by the way in which the Cornish creative industries work together, and said it was an exciting time for Cornwall.
The Cornwall Region for Culture bid was launched in May last year by Cornwall Arts Marketing. Since then, the 15 interactive pods have been touring the county in galleries, schools and venues where people can log their thoughts, feelings and views on Cornwall as a region of culture.
