Young aspiring squash players between the ages of eight and 16 from all over Cornwall played in a Junior Grand Prix held at Newquay Sports Centre.
This is a very popular one-day event and attracted 31 junior entrants. Some of the matches were at a very high standard which proclaims that squash is still a very popular sport at junior level, keeping it thriving and competitive within Cornwall county.
The idea is to set leagues with five or six equal ability squash players in each league played in a round robin format. Each plays one game to 15 points with the total points counting towards the overall score.
The leagues for the Newquay event were well matched and some really tough matches occurred. Many results were very close.
A total of six leagues were contested with some fine junior talent on display. The top premiere league saw young players from Penzance, Helston, Falmouth, Truro and Bude squash clubs all competing with each other. At the finish Tony Pepperell from Bude, getting the maximum of 75 points, triumphed over Truro's Chris Lawrence, who finished with 72 points.
The winners and runners ups were: League I: Winner, Tony Pepperell (Bude); runner-up, Chris Lawrence (Truro).
League II: Winner, Christian Thomas (Helston); runner-up, Ben Fairclough (Bude).
League III: Winner, Jess Vallance (Truro); runner-up, Will Vallance (Truro).
League IV: Winner, Rio Auty (Bude); runner-up, Adam George (Penzance).
League V: Winner, Logan Berriman (Truro); runner-up, Max Bodilly (Penzance).
League VI: Winner, Aron Auty (Bude); runner-up, Liam Berriman (Truro).
A series of Junior Grand Prix events are happening during the year with the next one being at Falmouth Sports Club on Saturday, February 10.
