PENDENNIS Motorcycle Club kicked off their 2007 season with the Double Diamond trial at Perranarworthal on Sunday. Points were also up for grabs with the event being the third round of the Cornwall Centre Championship.
The Experts on A route ended the first lap with four riders covered by seven marks. George Edyvean led Gareth Andrew by three marks and Simon James held a one-mark advantage over Shaun Martin. Andrew briefly led Edyvean for most of the first lap until the latter got his act together and put in a stunning second lap of just a two-mark loss.
That left Andrew to fight off Martin who was improving as the event progressed with Andrew returning consistent laps of 11, 10 and 11 against Martin's 16, 9 and 9 to secure a safe third podium position and leaving James a distant fourth due to a heavy second lap loss.
The B route winner, Robin Martin, didn't have it all his own way. It was Andrew Coombes who was leading after the first lap with Martin and Tristan Barnicoat right on his tail. Coombes suffered a double-five deficit on his second lap and with Barnicoat matching Martin they started the last lap with the latter one mark up. Barnicoat was the first to slip up when struggling to get out of section three and leaving Martin to take a four-mark advantage for the class win.
There was another close finish for the remaining awards. Phil Atkins' last lap score of three was the best on course and put him into a three-way tie with Dean Abrahams and Andrew Gough. It was Atkins who came out the best after the tie break rule was used to sort them out.
Swapping three wheels for two, current British Sidecar Motocross Champion passenger, Gavin Yelland, kept his feet up all day to claim overall on C route with a clean sheet.
This left the regular course quad winners to fight for the lower placings and it was another sidecar passenger, Neil O'Conner, who claimed the runner up spot by one mark from Barry Drew who just managed to hold off an improving Kevin Hawke.
Daniel Street claimed the Schoolboy A class, but it was B class winner, Lisa Orchard, who pushed him the most for overall best junior. Street held the upper hand after the first lap with his second and third lap marks increasing and with Orchard's decreasing they ended all square for the overall, but each clinched their class wins with Street having a four marks cushion over Chris Tabb in A's and Orchard with a similar advantage over Matt Tabb in the B's.
Ross Tremaine was never headed on D route and it gave him a comfortable class win over debutante Charlie Mooney who got to within one mark of Tremaine on his last la,p but it was too late to trouble the winner.
Once again the club wishes to thank the marshals, working party, competitors and especially the land owner, who made the event possible.
