WORKING boats swapped their daily chores for racing over the weekend for the tenth year in a row.

St Mawes Sailing Club hosted the Working Boats World Championships, organised by the Falmouth Working Boats Association, which ran from Friday to Sunday.

Strong wind saw races on the first day cancelled at the tournament which saw dozens of vessels, which are normally used for tasks like fishing or oyster picking, tackling the waves.

To make up for this, an extra race was added to the two scheduled for Saturday which saw much better weather conditions over the seas.

In the B Class, history was made as John Peters sailed his boat Rita to glory, becoming the first person to retain the title.

He won two of the first three races to take the overnight lead before ensuring the crown would return to him on Sunday by finishing sixth in the last race, winning the overall class championship by four points over Cousin Jinny, skippered by Martin Bidmead.

The C Class was dominated by Lottie, helmed by Paul Ferris, who was able to seal victory overall after the first day by winning all three of the races held.

This victory saw him take a bit of wind out of the sails on the final day as four-time former class champion Leila, manned by Adam Bird, win the last race of the weekend.

OVERALL RESULTS: B Class: 1st Rita – John Peters; 2nd Cousin Jinny – Martin Bidmead; 3rd Helen Mary – Kevin Andrew; 4th Evelyn – Rob Richards.

C Class: 1st Lottie – Paul Ferris; 2nd Leila – Adam Bird.
