Pop star Justin Timberlake may have sung about how he would "Cry Me a River" but for one member of staff at the Eden Project wool has replaced tears.

Carla Wentink, a member of the pollination team who acts as a guide to visitors, has decided to raise awareness of World Water Day by knitting a giant woollen river.

She will be getting out her knitting needles and wool at various locations around Eden on most afternoons, with help from fellow staff and any members of the public who feel like joining in.

The aim is to complete the knitted river in time for World Water Day, on March 22.

Carla, a supporter of Water Aid, said: "My job's all about communicating with people and knitting is a brilliant accompaniment to a good conversation. Anyone's welcome to come along and help me knit the river and I hope we can chat about water and its related issues in a positive way."

She initially planned to knit a 15cm square patch of "river" but then decided to up the ante and begin her very own tributary - with Water Aid liking the idea so much they donated a basket of blue wool to get the project flowing.

However, Carla is in need of more donations of wool and help with knitting in order to achieve the project in time.

"As well as help, I'm also looking for any spare wool in water shades - blues and greens specifically - that people would be able to donate. Although we're not sure what will happen to the river once we've finished knitting it, it would make fantastic blankets and we're looking into the possibility of donating it to a good cause that could make use of it," she explained.

Anyone who would like to donate wool by post can send it to Carla Wentink at the Eden Project, Bodelva, Cornwall, PL24 2SG or hand it over personally. To find out whether Carla will be knitting on a particular day, contact Eden on 01726 811911.
