Local organisations have confirmed support for the crew activity day being held on Gyllyngvase Beach as part of the Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta’s shoreside programme.
Cormac and Falmouth Tesco Metro are the latest to the step up to the mark to ensure that the event on Friday, August 29 is a success.
Tempus Leisure has planned a day of inter-ship sports challenges including beach volleyball, five-a-side football, beach sports and the Tall Ships traditional favourite – tug of war. A number of local sports organisations including, the Dracaena Centre, Falmouth Exeter Plus, Truro and Penwith College and Countrymen Volleyball Club are helping with the activities at Gyllyngvase.
The winter storms have re-profiled the sand on Gyllyngvase Beach and Cormac will provide additional support to the regatta by levelling the beach where the volleyball will be taking place.
Andy James, Cormac general manager, said: “Cormac is committed to supporting our communities and we are delighted to be able to offer some practical assistance to ensure that the planned events can take place.”
The crew activity day at Gyllyngvase is supported by a raft of organisations including Gylly Beach Café, which is providing water for the sports activities and dedicating part of the beach for the sports to take place, and St Michael’s Hotel and Spa which has offered the use of the tennis courts for the five-a-side.
Tesco Metro in Falmouth is providing lunches for the day, and is fully supportive of the regatta. Two of the store’s staff will be taking part in the Tall Ships Race leaving Falmouth on August 31 as trainees on board the Dutch Tall Ship Gulden Leeuw, customers and colleagues will be following their progress.
John Haymes, manager of Tesco Metro in Killigrew Street, said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this event as our team here at Tesco Falmouth Metro are really behind our two colleagues involved in the race.
“It is a great opportunity for Jemma and Jason and we hope they enjoy the experience. Also we are keen to raise the profile of the store within the local community and felt this was an opportunity not to be missed, as the regatta is so important for Falmouth.”
Sam Groom, festivals and events manager for Cornwall Development Company added: “A big thank you to all the organisations and individuals who have supported the event. The regatta could not take place without the tremendous support from a wide arrange of partners, sponsors and supporters and volunteers.”
