Applicants from as far afield as Portugal braved the elements to attend the very first Interview and Assessment day at Falmouth Marine School. The first of three selection days was organised for candidates applying to the NVQ Watersports Instructor course and the National Certificate in Watersports at Falmouth Marine School.

Current students from both watersports courses were on hand to talk to the applicants and help them experience some of the activities involved in the courses, including introductory kayaking skills. With activities taking place around the Maritime Museum and Falmouth harbour areas, the applicants were given a good understanding of the true nature and requirements of the course.

The Interview and Assessment day is an interview with a difference, enabling tutors to assess the candidates in action. After spending time out on the water, the applicants were given a short presentation followed by a formal interview.

Phil Sanger, course manager for the National Certificate in Watersports said: "The first selection day was a great success. It was great to see new applicants coached by some of our existing students. By running a selection day, instead of the standard interview, we hope to ensure that all our applicants are ideally suited to our courses or are given the appropriate advice to help them make the next step.

"Our aim is to keep training instructors to the highest standard and by offering selection days as well as interviews, we can assure we offer the right candidates places on the course."

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College said: "We always try to ensure that prospective students are suited to their chosen course. By spending time with current students and getting a real feel for what is expected, candidates can make an informed decision and will know if the course is right for them."

The next selection day will take place on March 5 with another to follow in the summer.
