deas Café: Porthcurno on Film December 15, 12.30pm.
Telegraph Museum, Porthcurno Archive film reels from the 1950s and 1960s, only recently digitised, are being screened for the first time in decades at a lunchtime talk at the award-winning Telegraph Museum Porthcurno.
The films, which are among thousands of records and objects in the museum’s historic archive, have recently been transferred to a modern digital format, allowing them to be watched and enjoyed again.
The Telegraph Museum’s collections manager, Charlotte Dando, will screen three of the films which showcase life in Porthcurno valley during the 50s and 60s.
She said: “Porthcurno at that time was a bustling hub for the international communications industry, attracting students from all over the world to the Cable & Wireless technical training college. Porthcurno was a vibrant melting pot. These films are a fascinating historic record and allow us to see a slice of valley life that may otherwise be forgotten.”
The films will give a snapshot of local life, from the annual community sports day to a spoof film titled ‘PK!’ made by college students in 1967. Miss Dando will present the films and discuss what they tell us about the history of Porthcurno and its role in global communications.
She will also talk about the museum’s plans for digitising more of the historic archive, and the work of preserving its archive collection.
Special tickets priced at £12.50 will give visitors the chance to enjoy the museum’s new exhibitions as well as the Ideas Café talk, and includes a delicious lunch in the museum’s new café.
