Fire Brigade Union members from across Cornwall and the South West will be attending a meeting of the Cornwall County Council Executive on Wednesday at New County Hall, Truro at 10am where the current budget proposals for the Fire Service will be discussed.
The meeting follows an earlier meeting of the scrutiny committee when a recommendation was made by a clear majority to maintain the current level of fire cover in Cornwall. The recommendation was made following proposals of cuts that would see a reduction in night time fire cover at Falmouth and Camborne fire stations.
Terry Nottle Cornwall FBU secretary said: "We will be attending the meeting of the executive on Wednesday to show our concern at the proposals to cut the level of fire cover at Falmouth and Camborne. We are all acutely aware of the consequences that increasing response times can have on public and firefighter safety, particularly at night."
Mike Tremellen Cornwall FBU chairman said: "We would hope that the executive take notice of the recommendation from the scrutiny committee, but we also recognise that the Fire Service needs a long term funding solution and not just a quick fix for this years budget. This would ensure the maintenance of a professional and responsive service that the people of Cornwall deserve."
