NEWQUAY 1 WENDRON 1

UNBEATEN at home since their first match at Mount Wise, Newquay proved just as resilient as ever for the Jolly's Combination League visit of Wendron.

On a difficult surface that has received its fair share of critics during the season, Wendron found out how difficult life can be for visiting teams as they struggled to get their normal passing game together.

"For a team who I think likes to play its football on the ground and does so on a good surface at Underlane, I suppose it would be fair to say that we did not find it to our liking and didn't help our performance. It was difficult to play our normal game and took us 20 minutes to really get to grips with it.

"You never knew what might happen with the ball, and to be honest we benefited from that rather fortuitously with our goal.

"Even so I was disappointed that we didn't get all three points because we dominated the second half and should have won."

It was Newquay who made the early running, but, despite their possession, there was never any real threat to the Wendron goal.

Wendron managed some raids against the strong wind, with Sean Johnston prominent, but no-one could get on the end of crosses that left the Peppermints off the hook.

Mike O'Neill eventually managed to be in the right place at the right time for a Johnston cross, but at the crucial point of contact the pitch played its part and robbed the striker of his chance.

The second half saw Wendron spending large periods of the game in Newquay's half, but unable to create the chances their play deserved.

It was then that the pitch worked in Wendron's favour in the 68th minute. A defender went to clear a ball hit deep from the Wendron half, but his foot only connected with fresh air and that left O'Neill with the opportunity to race clear and go round the goalkeeper to score.

The lead didn't last long, and five minutes later Newquay were back on level terms when they broke away from a Wendron free kick and scored.

The goal stung Wendron into action as they peppered the home goal with shots from Steve Hodson, Lee Gribble, and Mark Pope, but the break they needed eluded them.
