A talented footballer from Four Lanes died just hours after celebrating a 4-1 win over Porthleven with his team on Saturday.

Gareth Caddy, a centre forward with Praze FC, scored "a blinder" of a goal to help his team win 4-1 against Porthleven FC.

Just a few hours later his car collided with a wall in Four Lanes, on the B3280 between the junction of Hangman's Burrow and Croft Mitchell.

Police officers were called from Redruth, but on arriving at 11.40pm they found that the 23-year-old had already died from the injuries he sustained.

Roger Batt, manager of Praze FC, paid tribute to his talented player, who had been with the team since October-November after moving from Trevenson.

Mr Batt said: "It's been very difficult - we are all very low, extremely low. We all got together yesterday to try and make sense of it all."

He described Gareth as being in an "excellent, good mood" all day. Following the match, the team went to celebrate their victory at the St Aubyn Arms pub in Praze. That was the last time Gareth's team-mates would see him.

The Praze team's next game is due take place on Saturday, against Illogan, but the manager said he would be asking his team on Thursday whether they want to go ahead with it. If the match does go ahead, there will be some sort of tribute to Gareth - probably a minute's silence before the start of the game.

"He was a great guy," said Mr Batt. "He was upfront but kept his private life to himself. He was full of spirit and his presence on the field will be sorely missed. It is unbelievable and our condolences go out to the family for their loss."

A police spokesman said it was "too early to speculate" on the cause of the collision, which did not involve any other vehicles.

He said: "There are a number of lines of inquiry," adding that it was standard practice to examine the vehicle, look at the speed it was travelling at the time of the collision, seize the driver's mobile telephone and carry out toxicology tests.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 08452 777444, quoting log number 1426/10/02/07.
