FACING the biggest challenge in the club's history, Truro City made light of their fifth round FA Carlsberg Vase clash at Slimbridge United to stroll into the quarter-finals.

They now face another huge task, this time away to Whitehawks FC who defeated Quorn. Qorn had previously disposed of the breakway FC Manchester United.

It was a game that City controlled from beginning to end and the only surprise was that they didn't win by a bigger margin against a side that had tasted defeat only once before this season.

The Hellenic League side found themselves under pressure almost from the kick off and had to survive early efforts from Marcus Martin who hit the foot of a post from a header and Stewart Yetton.

The Gloucestershire side have been highly rated in non-league football, but they appeared to have no answer to City's slick football and it took them until midway through the half to get a shot on target through Kacey Johnstone.

The only surprise was that it took City until the 33rd minute to open the scoring and then it had a slice of good fortune about it. Scott Walker edged his way past Leon Sterling and delivered a cross into the box that Glyn Hooper got a touch to as he nudged it towards the far corner only for the ball to hit Allton Axton and deflect into the net.

The home side found it difficult to make much impression, but they enjoyed a good spell just before half time with Haddock wasting a chance when he blazed over the bar.

Former Tavistock player John Cole provided a glimmer of hope for the home side when his long, diagonal ball fell to John Cant, but he never threatened the goal with his wayward shot.

At the start of the second half Slimbridge badly needed a goal to shake City's confidence, but it was the visitors who snapped up a crucial second goal when Yetton's effort from Ian Gosling's cross was blocked and fell into the path of Hooper who made no mistake from close range.

The only real danger for City in the second half was a header from substitute Joe Tulstain, but the under-worked Dan Stevenson dealt comfortably with the effort.

City had further chances to extend their lead, but the third goal didn't come until eight minutes from time when Kevin Wills got into the box and delivered a perfect cross for Yetton to head home.

The home side's misery was completed in the dying minutes when Thomas was sent off for his second yellow card.

It's back to cup football again on Saturday when City visit Torpoint in the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter-finals.
