TRIUMPH turned to tragedy within hours for Praze footballers after they had enjoyed their finest hour in the club's history.

In the afternoon they had defeated Cornwall Junior Cup hot favourites Porthleven 4-1, but following an evening of celebrating a great result one of their players, Gareth Caddy was tragically killed in a car crash.

The 23-year-old striker had played a starring role during a cup clash that saw the club go one step further than when they were beaten by St Day in last season's semi-final.

The team's manager, Mr Roger Batt, said the club was trying to come to terms with the news.

"After such a high with the result, this has left the club devastated. It is so difficult to take in."

Earlier in the afternoon Praze were determined not to let the chance of reaching the Western Section final of the Cornwall Junior Cup pass them by for a second successive season and pulled off a stunning 4-1 win.

The first half was goalless, but early in the second half Lee Jewell scored from 10 yards.

Mark Miller hit an unstoppable 20 yard shot into the back of the net and the goal that clinched victory came from Gareth Caddy.

Goalkeeper Barrie-John Wyatt notched the fourth from the penalty spot with Andy Mills snapping up a consolation goal for the Fishermen.

The weather wrecked virtually the entire Whirlwind Sports Falmouth-Helston League programme at the weekend with only three games making it past the finishing post.

One game did start, Frogpool/Cusgarne v Lizard Argyle, but unfortunately it had to be abandoned after 53 minutes when a player sustained a broken leg.

Stithians and Mawnan will have to replay their Lockhart Cup tie after they drew 1-1. Matt McIlroy scored for Stithians and Damian Stevens had Mawnan's goal In division two Marazion defeated Helston III 6-1 with goals from Matt Gendall, Tresidder, Westren, Tom Dann, and Nigel Plumley.

Terry Bryant scored twice for Rosudgeon-Kenneggy at home to Perranporth Res, but the visitors ran out 3-2 winners.

In division three Bill Huckfield, Chris Gardner, and Stuart Hull scored the goals in Camborne Park's 3-2 win over Troon Res.

Ruan Minor maintained their promotion bid with a 5-1 win against Carharrack. The goals were scored by Darren Hill (2), Andy Giddens, Peter Johnson, Kai Turner, and Tom Milburn.
