Cornwall's James Morrison won the Best British Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards.

The singer who went to school in Newquay and was regularly seen singing in Truro before he hit the big time was pleased with his award.

"I really, really didn't expect this. I did try to think of a speech but I didn't want to pre-empt losing," he said.

"I'd just like to say I can't believe I'm here. This one's for every singer-songwriter still playing in pubs."

The Cornish singer beat well known opposition including Jarvis Cocker, Lemar, Paolo Nutini and Thom Yorke.

He grew up in Cornwall and was influenced by some of the legendary soul stars of the past.

He used to busk regularly in Truro and since then he has produced a platinum selling debut album, and enjoyed chart singles with releases from "Undiscovered".
