Students with learning difficulties are delivering the goods to businesses in Helston with the expansion of their sandwich delivery service.
Until recently the Mustard Seed Charity in Wendron Street has been producing freshly prepared sandwich on a small scale, for customers in the Open Door cafe. Starting in 2004, the aim has been to provide tuition in food preparation and money handling skills for a number of students, whilst also raising income for other aspects of the Christian based charity's activities.
Now, however, the plan is to expand the service, to deliver or business and individuals during weekdays.
Annette Burton has been appointed to supervise and escort the students, having previously taken a foundation course in food preparation and worked for the Helston WI in that area of expertise.
Annette, a mother of three, said: "My aim is to expand the number of customers for the sandwiches and in the future to include some easily transportable sweet things, prepared by the students, within the food offerings."
She found that the work was already proving to be both rewarding and challenging.
While fresh produce is bought in at this time of year, Annette said she was looking forward to using fresh vegetables and fruit harvested in the summer from the charity's allotment - another similar project run by Mustard Seed, to expand the range of practical experience provided for the students.
The sandwich round project has already become a firm favourite with the students involved in it, with one saying: "I told my mum I don't want to work anywhere else because I love it here."
Annette added: "We cater for a wide range of meat and vegetarian sandwiches and are ready to meet whatever people need. We can supply a selection in some quantity at fairly short notice for a business meeting in the town, or an order for one private individual."
