A cliff-top development proposed for Porthleven which has been branded "outrageous" by town councillors is being recommended for approval by Kerrier planning officers.

Fusion Developments is seeking planning permission to demolish Carn Del - a detached house on Loe Bar Road - and build two five-bedroom properties in its place.

Those who support the scheme point to the "desperate" state of the existing property and say the new houses will help increase the value of other properties in the area.

Local residents who are objecting to the proposal raise concerns including the overbearing appearance of the new houses in a prominent location, potential traffic problems and the instability of the cliff.

Town councillors also have major concerns about the stability of the cliff and coastal erosion, the "extreme unsuitability" of the design of the houses, sewage arrangements and access problems.

Commenting on the proposed plans in a letter to the district council, town councillors state: "We are appalled that this outrageous and intolerable development was even contemplated. We urge the planning committee at Kerrier to reject it utterly in the name both of good planning procedure and of common-sense."

The application is due to be discussed by members of Kerrier's planning committee at a meeting next Tuesday.

In her report to the meeting, principal planning officer Nicola Stinson recommends the proposal be approved. She states that the development would not have a detrimental visual impact on its surroundings and that the proposed use of some traditional materials reflects the character of the area.

She adds that the applicants have submitted an engineer's report concluding that the cliff is stable and capable of supporting the proposed development.
