Truro College has announced that a different kind of science course has been added to the curriculum because of a demand for Forensic Science.
The College is responding to the increased number of enquiries at open events and advice sessions from prospective students expressing an interest in Forensic Science and asking for this subject to be included.
Findings from a survey last year have shown that with TV programmes such as Waking the Dead, Silent Witness and C.S.I. "these days, more and more students claim their choice of career was inspired by a TV show". It seems more and more students are attracted to the challenges of Forensic Science, as depicted on TV, and are considering this subject for a career.
Despite concerns that there is a decline in interest for Science subjects at University level, Truro College continues to recruit remarkably large numbers of local students to the whole range of Science subjects and these students continue to achieve places at UK's best universities, medical and veterinary schools. Truro College is also starting a new 2 year Foundation Degree in Biomedical Sciences' from Sep '07 and these new Forensic students will be able to progress on to this university-level course without having to leave Cornwall for Higher Education.
Martin Lanyon, Programme Team Leader for Science said "This new full-time, two-year National Diploma Applied Science with Forensic Science' course will provide the opportunity for our students to acquire the new Forensic skills. It will also broaden their laboratory skills to make them employable in a much broader range of occupations including science journalism, radiography, chemical research and testing, biomedical sciences, environmental analysis, general laboratory work and other health-sector work."
