Motorists face tough new penalties for breaking the law by using a hand-held mobile phone while driving from February 27.

From that date, the fixed penalty will for the first time include the award of three penalty points as well as doubling the fine to £60.

To publicise the new rules, a giant display of mobile phones spelling out the new penalties is being erected in Lemon Quay, Truro tomorrow.

Road safety officers from Cornwall County Council and officers from Devon and Cornwall Police will be giving advice to the public.

A man whose wife was killed in a mobile phone / driving accident near Truro will also be at the event to help publicise the new rules.

The latest figures for the number of people issued with penalties for using mobile phones while driving in Devon and Cornwall are expected to be announced this week.
