Work starts in Truro on Monday March 5 at Back Quay on the installation of rising bollards which will be in operation from Thursday April 5 ahead of Easter.

Back Quay will be closed whilst the work takes place and access to businesses will be coordinated by CORMAC, the highway maintenance contractual arm of Cornwall County Council, who will be carrying out the works.

South West Water works being carried out by Nuttall will continue on Fairmantle Street and onto Tabernacle Street and will also involve further road closures.

CORMAC is installing the two rising bollards along Back Quay in order to improve safety for pedestrians and to create a better city centre environment by preventing illegal traffic movements across the Back Quay and also prohibiting all motor vehicles from a section of Lemon Quay. This is in line with the results of Carrick District Council's Public Open Space Consultation on the proposed Management and Action Plan for Lemon Quay. The overwhelming public response to the consultation questionnaire was for the Quay to be a pedestrianisation space, with regulated business vehicle delivery times, and no further use by any other vehicular traffic elsewhere on the Quay'.

One bollard will be sited at the entrance to Back Quay from Green Street; the other will be sited at the junction with Tabernacle Street on the pedestrian side of Lemon Quay.

Vehicular access for events on the Quay will remain from Green Street; however vehicular access to Lemon Quay between Wetherspoon and Marks & Spencer will be removed. (Loading facilities exist to the businesses on Lemon Quay at the rear of the premises).

The bollards will not involve the introduction of new traffic restrictions as they will merely be enforcing the existing restrictions and will be assisted by the rationalisation of traffic movement on the Quay itself which together will contribute to improving the safety in the area especially at times of peak pedestrian movement.

Taxi stands are handled by Carrick District Council and Cornwall County Council are working closely with them to address the issues surrounding taxi rank provision.

Buses and emergency vehicles will not be inconvenienced by the bollards and all Emergency Services have been consulted and have given their approval to the scheme. Buses will be redirected whilst the works take place and measures will be in place for those services that use the quay - either to cross or collect/drop off passengers.
