THREE trees have been planted in Kimberley Park, Falmouth to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.

The Cornwall branch if the International Tree Foundation in partnership with the Cornish Garden Nursery at Perranarworthal planted an Acer, a Liquid Amber and a Catalpa.

The abolition of the slave trade bill was passed on March 25 1807 and was celebrated in Falmouth, Jamaica with the ceremonial burying of a set of slaves shackles.

This year is also the anniversary of the death of Richard St Barbe Baker, the founder of the Men of Trees, now called the International Tree Foundation.

Throughout his life he promoted the planting of trees to combat the effects of drought and population increase. A lot of his work was in Africa where the majority of the slaves came from.
