TORPOINT 0

TRURO CITY 1

TRURO City maintained their unbeaten run with a hard fought and somewhat fragmented display against Torpoint Athletic in the quarter final of the Cornwall Senior Cup at The Mill on Saturday.

With a mixture of suspensions and injuries affecting the manager's selection, City made no less then seven changes from the FA Vase winning team a week earlier and left it until the last ten minutes to score the winning goal.

Glynn Hooper wasted an early one-on-one chance when he delayed his shot and allowed the Torpoint goalkeeper time to smother the attempt.

Minutes later Andy Watkins was put through by Kevin Wills, but he was pulled back by a Torpoint defender on the edge of the area. The referee was a little lenient when he showed the player a yellow card rather than the more serious colour of red which, perhaps, would have been better suited to the foul committed.

Most of the play during this encounter took place in the midfield area and there were very few clear cut hances made on the day. Reski put in another solid display in the middle of the park and the pacy ex-Plymouth Argyle man created City's best chances in the first half with his skilful and creative passing.

The second half began in similar vein with City having most of the possession and controlling the game without really creating any meaningful chances. Torpoint, however, did make Stevenson scamper across his line after a wicked cross-cum-shot flew across the six-yard box but no one was able to capitalise.

The main talking point of the match came on 77 minutes when a Torpoint throw reached Gary Ashton in the penalty area. The player was brought down by City midfielder Kevin Wills, but surprisingly both the referee and his assistant waved play on.

Two minutes later, and with only ten minutes remaining, Gosling took a City corner and the clearance fell straight to Wills who scored the winning goal and City's 150th of the season.

This wasn't one of City's most convincing displays, but the objective was achieved and they now march on into the Senior Cup semi-finals.

City entertain Larkhall Athletic at home on Saturday.

Before the match a minutes silence was held in memory of Praze player Gareth Caddy. The Stones restricted the Tinners to a few long range efforts. Ryan Stephens tested the keeper at the other end and Marc Taylor had a couple of good chances to open the scoring.

Threemilestone opened the scoring ten minutes into the second half with a great solo effort from Ryan Stephens. He picked the ball up on the halfway line before beating three players and driving an unstoppable shot into the top corner from twenty yards.

St Just did have a couple of good chances on the counter attack and Tim Grose had a goal ruled out for the Stones.

Stephens made sure of victory for the Stones with his second goal in the 85th minute, when his shot went in off the post.
