An exhibition celebrating the work of the Portscatho Colony of artists is opening at Falmouth Art Gallery on Saturday, March 3rd.

The exhibition, which has been organised in conjunction with the New Gallery in Portscatho, features the work of many popular local painters including Grace Gardner, Trevor Felcey, Eric Ward, Michael Stone and Lynn Golden and offers a wide variety of subject matter including still life, modern abstract and landscape.

The Portscatho Society of Artists was started in 1984, shortly followed by the opening of the gallery and studio associated with their work. The small Cornish fishing village on the Roseland has inspired many artists, some often staying, but others who have briefly used the Colony as a stepping stone in their careers.

The exhibition celebrates a book of the same title - Portrait of a Cornish Art Colony written by Chris Insoll of the New Gallery. The book documents the work of the local art colony and the impact it has had on the community and the arts in Cornwall. A limited number of signed copies will be available at the gallery during the exhibition.

For children there are fun drawing and activity sheets produced by Nick Brennan, cartoonist for The Beano and The Dandy, and a series of themed workshops will be available for schools, community groups and families throughout the exhibition.

Chris Insoll will be opening the exhibition with a lunch time talk on Saturday, March 3rd 2007, at 2pm. The talk will cover the history of the Portscatho Art Colony and the artists featured in the exhibition. It is open to anyone who would like to come and is free.

The show Portscatho - Portrait of a Cornish Art Colony is sponsored by David Lay, The Penzance Auction House, in association with the New Gallery and can be seen at Falmouth Art Gallery until April 28th, 2007. Open Monday to Saturday 10- 5, also open throughout the Easter holidays apart from Good Friday. Admission is free.
