RNAS CULDROSE 0
WENDRON 0
THESE two teams finished this Jolly's Combination League game as they started it, goalless and a point each.
That was just about what each side deserved from a game that was dominated by the windy conditions and produced few moments of real quality.
"You have to take the positives out of a game like this," said Culdrose assistant manager Neil Rudkin. "We have now gone on a run of seven games unbeaten in eight, and much of that has to do with the fact that we are now picking virtually the same side each week.
"That's giving the team confidence, and although we didn't get the three points against Wendron it was still a determined performance.
"A draw was the right result because although there were one or two chances, neither goalkeeper had to make a serious save.
"I thought we created the better of the chances," said Wendron's Gary Pascoe, "but overall both sides would have been happy with a draw. The conditions were very difficult, but we were pleased to have put in a battling performance against a strong Culdrose side."
Neither side enjoyed long periods of flowing football, but Wendron went close in the 14th minute when Chris James' long ball was flicked on by Gregg Hobbs for Justin Searle to hit a first-time shot into the sidenetting.
The match developed into a midfield battle, but in the 37th minute Justin Searle skipped past George Pattison and pulled the ball back to the penalty spot for Hobbs to fire wide after being hurried into his shot by a determined challenge from a defender.
Three minutes before the break, Mark Pope controlled a free kick from James and laid it into the path of Hobbs whose first-time volley clipped the bar.
The game became more stretched in the second half, and in the 53rd minute Lee Gribble's free kick struck the bar and bounced down, but no-one was near enough to touch it into the net.
Hobbs shot wide after good work by Adam Toy, but in the 61st minute Culdrose, who generally tried their luck with long-range efforts, threatened when a deep cross by Marty Bulgin went over goalkeeper Bryan Scoffin, but the far post header by Jamie Marles was cleared off the line by James.
Five minutes later Bulgin did well again to find Marles, who thumped in a volley that was again cleared off the line by James to prevent Culdrose from scoring Sean Johnston and Gribble worked a neat one-two for Johnston to see his shot parried by goalkeeper Tom Collins only for Hobbs to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Substitute Steve Gillett almost snatched victory in the dying minutes when he shot wide, but Culdrose could also have snatched victory at the death when Sam Connell's shot from the edge of the box just cleared the bar.
