MAWNAN Primary School has taken a big stride towards green travel with the intro duction of two "walking buses" for children who attend the school.

They will enable parents and children to walk to school from two locations within Mawnan Smith and have been set up to relieve traffic around the school gates and to give the children a healthy and fun journey to school.

On Monday and Tuesday mornings parents and children form the "walking bus" from the playgroup car park to the school and on Thursday and Friday mornings the parents and children will walk from the Square to the school.

The "walking buses" are being supported by volunteer parents, and means the children will now be able to walk to school most days, helping to cut down on congestion and pollu tion around the school entrance. The parent volunteers and children will wear high-visi bility tabards, provided by Cornwall county council, for safety.

Randall Brook, head teacher said: "We are delighted that we have a walking bus' start ing at the school. Not only will it have health benefits for all involved but it will help relieve the congestion and parking problems that occur at the school entrance every morning."

A "walking bus" is a parent/school sup ported project whereby trained volunteers will escort children to and from school along a set route, with the aim encouraging parents to become volunteers, making it possible for parents who are unable to walk to school to allow their children to join in.
