ILLOGAN 1 NEWQUAY 0
ILLOGAN picked up another three points in their quest for the Jolly's Combination League title, but there was little else to enthuse about in a poor display.
Both sides managed to play some neat football up to the final third, but then it all went pearshaped as defences dominated.
One of the game's most controversial incidents occurred in the 13th minute when S Lawrence was brought down in the box. Jamie Briant took the penalty for Newquay, but had his effort saved by Danny Burrows and although he knocked the rebound into the net the goal was disallowed for encroachment.
Danny Scorer had a chance for Illogan in the 17th minute, but put his close range effort over the bar.
Ten minutes later Illogan had their only other real chance of the half when Andy Cowper headed Scorer's corner over the bar from six yards.
The second half offered little in the way of change apart from when the home side began to make substitutions. They paid off nine minutes from time when Rob Bray's near-post corner was flicked in by Gareth Pitt.
Cowper had a chance to make it two after going around the goalkeeper, but with an empty goal to shoot at he hit the post.
The impressive Tom Hogarth ensured Newquay were not going to snatch a late equaliser, but in the final minute Illogan were reduced to ten men when Simon Ellis was sent off.
Illogan: D Burrows, A Clarke, D Holsey, T Hogarth, D Scorer, S Ellis, R Bray, N Medlin, B Widdershoven, A Cowper, R Gregory. Subs: A Hill, S Peters, G Pitt.
