Firefighters from Blue Watch, Falmouth will be delivering their Road Awareness and Accident Prevention (RAAP) lecture at Falmouth School at 1.15pm on Thursday March 8.
The RAAP programme is a new initiative adopted from Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority by Cornwall County Council's Phoenix Project.
The aim of the programme is to cut the number of road traffic collisions in Cornwall by providing Year 11 students with a hard-hitting insight into what happens to road accident victims and the aftermath from injuries and fatalities.
The programme aims to increase awareness through education and give an insight into motor vehicle entrapment and decrease the rate of teenage death and injury in traffic accidents.
The programme includes a classroom presentation where experienced firefighters explain the realities of accidents, detailing the effects of injuries and the grief caused. Real life footage is shown and photographs and media clips reinforce the devastating effects of road accident trauma.
Tim Cocks, Phoenix Project Manager said: "The Phoenix Team have been presenting this new package to schools, in addition to their other interactive courses. The firefighters from Falmouth decided to help us to deliver the messages" .
"RAAP explores why road traffic collisions happen and explains the fire service's role, including patient extrication. Firefighters attend more road accidents that have caused injury or death than fires, which is why it is important for us to promote safety awareness to young drivers and their passengers "
Last year seven young people died on Cornwall's roads.
