Going under the spotlight at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth renowned pilot gig builder and boat restorer Ralph Bird, from Devoran, spoke to a full audience of 100 enthusiasts about the coloured history of the pilot gig.
So successful was the evening, another is planned for later in the spring.
Talking passionately and with incredible knowledge, not only was his sell-out lecture a celebration of the pilot gig, he was also celebrating his 100th talk.
Exploring how gigs were used in rescuing survivors from shipwrecks, carrying flowers and goods, and even for weddings and funerals, Ralph charted the rise of gig racing.
Milly Newman, the Museums Discovery Talks organiser said: "The talk not only covered the historical background of Cornish Gigs but also included Ralphs vast and fascinating experience of gig boat building. Ralph is integral to the Gig community in Cornwall and it was great to see so many supporters at the talk."
Achieving such a great response to the talk, the museum and Ralph have decided to put on a repeat performance on May 30. This will coincide with the Fal River Festival which launches on May 26.
