WENDRON 5 FALMOUTH TOWN 2
WENDRON were in sparkling form for their Jolly's Combination League match with Falmouth Town at Underlane on Saturday and handed out a 5-2 drubbing.
Neither goalkeeper was troubled in the opening stages, but Bryan Scoffin had to be alert to make a very good save from Bobby Bryant's close range effort.
It was Matt Prynn's turn to steal the limelight when Gregg Hobbs' header from David Toy's corner was turned round the post following a fine diving save.
Adam Toy touched Hobbs' cross wide of the post as Wendron began to seize the initiative and when Hobbs was forced wide by the 'keeper he crossed the ball for David Toy to drill his shot over the bar.
Wendron took the lead in the 35th minute when Justin Searle won possession and worked a one-two with Hobbs before cutting in and firing a fierce shot past the 'keeper.
Three minutes later Hobbs just failed to connect with a cross by Tony Harris, but Town also had a chance when Scoffin had to make a good save at the near post.
The Toy brothers both drilled good opportunities over the bar, but in the dying seconds of the half Wendron went 2-0 in front when Jeff Till intercepted the ball and fed David Toy who made ground before crossing to the far post where Searle rifled in his second goal.
Early in the second half Town had a chance to get back into the game when Bryant put Duncan Gillett through, but the ball ran away from him as he shot and his effort was wide of the target.
Wendron soon began to dominate possession and create all sorts of problems for Town's defence and the weight of attacks had them on the back foot as it became one-way towards the visitors' goal.
Adam Toy chested down a pass from Joe Cooper and laid the ball into the path of Hobbs, but his shot was somehow deflected on to the cross bar.
It wasn't until the 70th minute that Wendron made it 3-0 when Adam Toy picked up a pass from Jamie Wilkes and swept the ball wide to David Toy who beat the 'keeper with a low drive.
Five minutes later the home side snapped up a fourth goal when David Toy fed Adam Toy who gave the Prynn no chance with a clinical finish.
Three minutes later Town's Bryant pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Mike Newberry was ruled to have handled in the box, but Wendron had a penalty of their own when Harris ghosted past a defender and was then pulled back. Searle took the spotkick and made no mistake to complete his hat-trick.
Town grabbed a second goal in the dying minutes when Bryant's shot from the edge of the box took a deflection and beat Scoffin, but it was too little too late for Town who were fortunate to escape conceding just five goals..
