Residents would suffer if plans to fill the remaining land on a Falmouth business park with six two-storey buildings were given the go ahead, councillors have warned.

An application has been submitted to build 13 self-contained office units at Falmouth Business Park in Bickland Water Road, which would be housed in six two-storey buildings.

However, members of Falmouth town council's planning committee were strongly against the proposal by Priority Sites Limited, when they considered the plans last night.

Councillor Mike Varney said: "Unfortunately this area has been put aside for a business park. But there are a lot of residents that have great concerns."

He warned that the residents of Mongleath Avenue would be particularly effected, as their houses were set around six to eight feet below the level of the business park.

"We had great concerns about loss of light from their gardens. Also the fact that the ones down the far end will have a case of being hemmed in," he added.

The business park already contains six office buildings, including the Packet headquarters, which are mainly single storey.

Mr Varney continued: "I've thought long and hard about this and there was, everybody thought, a policy of only having singe storey down there."

Members agreed with Mr Varney's proposal to recommend that be plans be refused on the grounds that the development would be "totally out of keeping" with the area, an over-development of the site and would mean of a loss of residents' amenities, including light.

He suggested putting as a footnote that if the buildings were made into single-storey then the council may look more favourably on the plans.

Councillor Stephen Eva added that he would like to see the maximum number of additional buildings on the site limited to five.
